Simple Travels: Wonderspaces San Diego 2018

I kicked off my summer vacation with a visit to one of my favorite interactive art museums in California. Wonderspaces in San Diego is a pop-up art exhibit that features different immersive pieces every year by artists around the world. I'll be referencing from many of last year's installations, so if you haven't read my entry on 2017's featured set of artworks, head over here! Shameless self-plugging aside, let's dissect the gravity of this year's pieces.

Simple Travels: Enchanted Forest of Light

The holidays always call for romantic date nights, and the Enchanted: Forest of Light is quite possibly one of the most magical spots to spend the season with a significant other. It's definitely one for the books and another thing checked off my bucket list since it's exactly my type of happy place. I'm all for unique interactive installations when it comes to places to visit, so I'd say this was worth every penny. A trip to an extraordinary art exhibit always constitutes a solid adventure, so let me take you to one of the sickest pop-up museums in southern California that definitely tops my list of contemporary favorites. Wonderspaces in San Diego is a short-term display of unique installations, most of which I tried to capture to the best of my ability so if you don't get the opportunity to visit this captivating space, here's your chance to experience the pieces vicariously through my mediocrely composed iPhone snapshots!

Simple Travels: The Broad

I don't get to travel much, but I'm starting this series from now on for whenever I do go somewhere new even if it's just at a Los Angeles museum. The Broad (pronounced "brode") has been on my bucket list for months ever since I saw photos everywhere on social media, and it was all the more worthwhile that I got to go on my 21st birthday weekend. It's nothing like any museum at Los Angeles, so it was definitely a captivating experience especially because I finally got to see the mesmerizing Infinity Mirrored Room up close and personal. Infinity Mirrored Room - The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away

You have 45 seconds in a mirrored room of infinite lights. What do you do?
Reflect. Embrace and reflect on breathtaking but fleeting experiences like this and quiet moments by yourself.
This exhibit is easily one of the most beautiful I’ve seen by far - not only because of its mesmerizing aesthetic appeal but also for the fascinating story behind it. Supposedly, each light bulb represents a human soul from millions of lightyears away and the mirrors are meant to evoke a sense of "self-obliteration in the light of another world." Ultimately, it's meant to leave you pondering about life, death, and whatever the universe holds. To me, it almost felt like stepping into nothing but at the same time an endless sight of undiscovered beauty that lies beyond our scope of knowledge on the world we live in.
The scene was visually calming but also mentally overwhelming in a way. Perhaps it's because of the sea of thoughts and emotions flooding within a very limited amount of time in a confined space that’s actually as small as a telephone booth. Whatever interpretation that Kusama's immersive work may elicit, I personally view it as a reminder to perceive the world in ways that you don't usually do especially in the face of personal struggles and negativity - much like how van Gogh, despite having gone through the lowest point in his life, still saw the beauty in a plain blue sky and depicted it as a celestial, surreal constellation in the masterpiece that we all know as The Starry Night.
This installation is so much more than a pitch black room lit up by thousands of dazzling lights - and certainly a lot more than a site for perfect selfies; it’s an ephemeral experience that inspires you to detach from reality and reflect on what you could be missing out on if you don’t look up once in a while.
If you’re only given 45 seconds to be in a place like this, maybe take the first five to capture the moment then spend the rest of the time to simply look around and live through the fleeting experience. Beauty doesn’t last, but it can always leave a lasting impression if you appreciate it enough.
Definitely check out this ethereal display at The Broad before it closes this March! Trust me, it's well worth the wait especially if you're inclined towards existential contemplation.

I spent Veteran's Day at LACMA with a couple of my high school friends to observe galleries for my photography project. The "See the Light" exhibition was rather fascinating; I would post pictures but viewing them in person is much more exciting, so definitely check it out while it's still ongoing.

Simple Travels: Scavenger Hunt

Here's a little non-fashion (but still art) related filler to compensate for the past days when I didn't post anything. It's my first project in my Photo 150 class, and I never thought photography could be this difficult, maybe even harder than drawing! Anyway, each of these pictures represents a word provided to us and we were supposed to interpret and translate them to photos. I tried... I really did.
